Donations to Huni Kuin
The Amazon rainforest is often called the "lungs of the Earth," —this vast ecosystem regulates the planet’s climate and is home to countless species of flora and fauna, many of which are endangered. Yet deforestation and fires are devastating this precious ecosystem. About 17% of the Amazon rainforest has already been lost. Every minute, an area of the Amazon rainforest the size of about five football pitches is cut down. (WWF-UK) The reality is that we all have a joint responsibility in protecting the Amazon. The Huni Kuin know better than anyone that the destruction of the rainforest will lead to a catastrophic loss of biodiversity, climate instability, and a devastating blow to their own indigenous peoples who have lived in harmony with this land for millennia.
The Power of Education: Building a Culture and Ancestral Knowledge School
The Huni Kuin's solution is to empower their next generation through education. As part of their larger initiative to preserve their culture and raise awareness about environmental conservation, they are working to build a spiritual and ancestral knowledge school in their village Chico Curumim. The purpose of this project is to build a culture and spiritual centre in the village of Chico Curumim, named after one of the greatest Pajés (shaman) of the region, Txana Tuin. This school will serve as a sanctuary for their ancestral teachings, healings and wisdoms, where young Huni Kuin can learn about their history, art, spirituality, and the ecological importance of the forest.
Rita, Yuka and Shannon explained that this school will not just be a place of learning but a beacon of resilience, where indigenous wisdom and environmental stewardship are passed down. The funds raised from the sale of their handmade jewellery will go directly towards the creation of this vital educational institution.
