In the studio with Kent artist Jude Askey-Brown

Walking into Jude Askey-Brown’s studio at Godinton House feels like stepping into a greenhouse.  Pelargoniums are everywhere.  They fill her canvases, climb across sketches and appear in paintings stacked against the walls. It’s easy to see why the flower has become her signature subject.

Inspired by the pelargoniums her grandfather once grew on his windowsills, Jude has returned to them throughout her career. They now sit at the heart of her latest edit for Farly Finds.

For this collection, the window became her muse. Throughout the series, it frames pots of pelargoniums against shifting light, acting almost like a stage set and blurring the line between inside and outside.

Curtains sweep across her paintings like theatre drapes, opening onto tangled stems, terracotta pots and blooms caught in changing light. The plants seem to come alive, their arms stretching and twisting across the canvas with a quiet sense of movement.

Growing up in Derbyshire, creativity was part of everyday life. With a painter and ceramicist grandfather and a textile designer mother, art was always close at hand. After studying textiles and spending years teaching art, Jude eventually returned to painting full-time.

Today, her work draws inspiration from artists including Matisse, Bonnard and the Bloomsbury Group. But what makes her paintings distinctive is their warmth and romance. Inherited objects, favourite textiles and flowers from the garden appear again and again, transforming ordinary moments into something animated and dreamy.

Working in layered oils, Jude often mixes chalk into her paint, creating the soft, velvety matte finish that has become a hallmark of her work. The result is paintings that feel luminous, atmospheric and rich with memory.

That same spirit runs throughout her exclusive Farly Finds edit. Inspired by windows, gardens and everyday beauty, the collection captures the joyful, colourful world that defines Jude’s work.
